“My Wife Thinks I’m Paranoid For Wanting Home Security”

If you have any questions about home security or automation that you’d like to ask, you can always send your inquiries to info@getpiper.com and we’d be more than happy to answer them!

Jonathan, a new Piper user, recently wrote in to us about the tough time he had convincing his wife Margaret that home security was a smart investment for their household.

Consumer Reports Names Piper The Best Overall Home Security System!

He writes:

I recently got married and moved into a townhouse with my wife in a decent part of town. When I say ‘decent‘ I mean average – we’re not living in a ritzy part of town, but we’re not exactly slumming it, either. Our city as a whole is also generally safe.

I’ve never had a security system before, but I always knew that it was something I’d have to have when I got a place of my own – good neighborhood or not.

This is my wife and I’s first time living together and we’ve never really discussed the topic, so you can imagine how surprised I was to find out that she was displeased with me buying a Piper camera.

She thinks I’m just being paranoid because our neighborhood doesn’t seem like the type to have a property crime problem, but whenever we’re not in I feel anxious about the idea of coming home to find that our place has been broken into.

My anxiety about returning to our home in shambles isn’t extreme or anything – I think she’s exaggerating when she says that. In fact, I think she’s more scared of the idea of one of us accidentally calling the police and being charged for reporting false alarms.

Anything I can say to get her on board?

Well Jonathan, I don’t think that wanting to protect your home makes you a paranoid person. There are a lot of things we invest money in for just in case reasons – warranties on various products we buy, home insurance, car insurance, dental insurance, fire extinguishers, phone case covers,  smoke detectors, helmets, and the list goes on.

With things like I listed above and home security, it’s always better to be safe than sorry in the event that something happens where you wish you had decided to protect yourself.

If it’s just false alarms that your wife is worried about causing to the city and police force – you can reassure her that Piper’s built in motion sensor was designed to eliminate false alarms, and because the system is self-monitored, she doesn’t have to worry about tying up the police force or paying any fines in the unlikely event that she receives a false alarm. All either of you would have to do is check into your app to see what’s going on at home in real-time!

  1. Are there any new updates coming. I’m patiently waiting to be able to install a garage door opener and it would really be nice to have geo fencing or a key fob. It’s been a long time since we’ve had any type of updates. Thanks, Bill.

    1. Hi Bill,

Thanks for asking! We’ve got a new update coming in the next few weeks that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

  2. I think that having home security, no matter where you live, is important. I live in a relatively safe area as well, but I always make sure to turn on my home security at night because like you said, in case of the worst happening, you want to be prepared. Thanks for sharing your insight on this.

  3. Personally… If I hear what could be someone prowling around the outside of my house at night, I’d feel safer taking a quick look at the camera(s) from the safety of being inside my home, than to walk outside in the dark wilding only a flashlight. I also have a child who is home alone while I’m at work. It gives me peace of mind to be able to see my child board the school bus in the morning and see she made it home & is safely secured inside the house.
